Elliot H. Gertel is Irving M. Hermelin Curator Emeritus of Judaica at the University of Michigan, where he spent the last 20 of his 30 years as an academic librarian.
Gertel served on AJL Executive Board from 2002-2008 and Council from 2002-2013. He presented at AJL Conferences from 1994-2018 and moderated sessions from 1993-2023. He was RAS President, 2006-08; AJL Recording Secretary, 2002-04; ALA Liaison, 1997-2001 and 2008-20; and ALA Ethnic and Information Exchange Round
Table Jewish Information Committee Chair from 1997-1999, and 2011-17. He devised, coordinated, and chaired AJL-ALA joint programs, which took place from 1995-2016.
Gertel taught Yiddish at the University of Michigan, University of Kentucky, Florida Atlantic University, and synagogues in Lexington, Kentucky. He facilitates Yidish Tish, a
weekly virtual Yiddish conversational and reading group.
